Create vVols NVMe masking view

VMware vVols enables data replication, snapshots, and encryption to be controlled at the VMDK level instead of the LUN level, where these data services are performed on a per VM (application level) basis from the storage system.

Prerequisites

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

The Initiator Group that is used in a vVols NVMe Masking View must contain only one ESX NVMe Initiator. The Initiator Group that is used cannot be used to mask non-vVol devices and cannot be used for other protocols.

About this task

To create a vVols NVMe masking view:

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Select Storage > vVol Dashboard.
  3. In the Actions panel, click Create vVols NVMe masking view.
  4. Specify a host. Do one of the following:
    • Select an existing host from the list. Only hosts that contain at least one NVMe Initiator are displayed.
    • To create a host, click Create Host. The Create Host dialog displays. For more information, see Create hosts.
    NOTE:  An existing NVMe host can be selected, or a new NVMe host can be created.
  5. Click Next.
  6. On the Select Port Group pane, specify a port group. Do one of the following:
    • To create a port group, select New. Optionally select the Include ports not visible to host checkbox. Select one or more of the available ports from the list. Only ports using the NVMe TCP protocol are displayed.
    • To use an existing port group, select Existing, and select a port group from the port group list. Only port groups using the NVMe TCP protocol are displayed.
  7. Click Next.
  8. On the Summary page, review the details and optionally modifies the autogenerated Masking View name.
  9. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
